German Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    whole cucumbers
    salt water (2 c. salt in 1 gal. water, enough to cover cukes)
    alum water (2 Tbsp. alum to 1 gal. water)
    water
    1 tsp. mace
    3 sticks cinnamon, crushed
    1 tsp. cloves
    5 lb. sugar
    5 pt. vinegar
Preparation
    Soak whole cucumbers in salt water 7 days.
    Take cukes out; wash (peel if desired) and slice.
    Soak in alum water for 24 hours.
    Be sure cukes are covered.
    Take cukes out and wash 3 times in water.
    Next, mix remaining ingredients.
    (For lighter pickles, tie spices in cheesecloth.)
    Bring vinegar, sugar and spices to a boil.
    Pour over cukes.
    Let set 4 days.
    Pack in jars.
    Bring pickling solution to a boil; pour over cukes and seal.
