Burnt Sugar Icing - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    4 c. white sugar
    1 1/2 c. milk
    1/2 stick margarine
    2 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 tsp. salt
Preparation
Put three cups of the sugar and the milk in a saucepan; heat to boiling point.
Put remaining cup of sugar in an iron skillet over low heat; stir as sugar melts and becomes a light brown.
Remove skillet from heat and slowly pour in the sugar-milk mixture from saucepan, stirring all the while.
Return to heat and cook until a small dab of the mixture forms a soft ball between the fingers when dropped into cold water.
Add margarine, vanilla and salt; allow to stand for five minutes.
Beat until stiff enough to spread on cake or use as candy.
