David'S Corn Bread - cooking recipe
Ingredients

1 1/2 c. flour
3 c. corn meal
1 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. milk
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 c. melted shortening
3 beaten eggs
1 c. hot water
1 tsp. baking powder
4 lb. unpeeled figs (ripe, but firm)
3 1/2 lb. sugar
2 lemons, de-seeded and chopped
Preparation

Wash the figs in lukewarm water.
Discard water.
Leave the skins on the fruit and a short portion of the stem so the juices remain inside the fig.
(This procedure also helps figs retain their shape throughout cooking.)
Place the figs inside a large bowl or pot filled with the sugar.
Let stand for at least 24 hours.
(Figs make their own juices, somewhat like strawberries.)
