Scotch Bars - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sifted flour
    1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/8 tsp. soda
    1/2 c. chopped nuts
    1/3 c. shortening
    1 c. firmly packed brown sugar
    1 Tbsp. hot water
    1 egg, slightly beaten
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1/2 c. Baker's semi-sweet chocolate, lemon or caramel chips
Preparation
    Sift flour, baking powder, soda and salt together.
    Add nuts and mix well.
    Melt shortening in saucepan; remove from heat. Add egg and vanilla and blend, then add flour mixture, a small amount at a time, mixing well after each addition.
    Turn into greased 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
    Sprinkle chips over top.
    Bake in moderate oven (350\u00b0) 20 to 25 minutes.
    Do not overbake.
    Cool in pans, then cut into bars.
    Makes about 2 dozen bars.
