Onion Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 Tbsp. butter
    4 c. onion, thinly sliced
    1/2 tsp. sugar
    1 Tbsp. flour
    salt
    freshly ground pepper
    4 slices French bread, dried or toasted
    1/2 c. freshly grated parmesan cheese
Preparation
    Melt butter in a large pot, add onions and cook very slowly, about 45 minutes, over low heat, stirring often.
    Stir in sugar, flour and cook for 3 minutes.
    Add water and simmer partially covered for 30 minutes.
    Add salt and pepper to taste.
