Ingredients

1 c. sugar
1/2 c. flour or 1/4 c. cornstarch
1/4 tsp. salt
3 c. milk
4 eggs
3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 (9-inch) baked pie crust
meringue for pie
Preparation

For filling: In medium saucepan, combine sugar, flour or cornstarch and salt.
Gradually stir in milk.
Cook and stir over medium heat until thick and bubbly.
Reduce heat and cook and stir for 2 minutes more.
Remove from heat.
Separate eggs.
Set whites aside for meringue.
Beat yolks slightly.
Gradually stir 1 cup of hot mix into yolks.
Return egg mixture to saucepan and bring to gentle boil.
Cook and stir 2 minutes more.
Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla.
