Ingredients

2 c. rolled oats
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 c. all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 c. hot water
1/2 c. shortening, melted and cooled
1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation

Combine oats, sugar, flour and salt.
Combine soda and water. Stir into oat mixture with shortening and vanilla.
Roll into walnut-size balls.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 10 minutes.
Remove from oven and let stand 2 minutes, then remove to wire rack.
Makes about 3 1/2 dozen.
