Mary Jacob'S Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    cucumber slices
    1 c. iodized salt
    2 Tbsp. alum
    apple vinegar
    2 Tbsp. spices
    9 c. sugar
Preparation
    Fill a gallon jug with cucumber slices; add salt.
    Finish filling jug with water. Shake well.
    Let set 4 days, shaking each day.
    At the end of the fourth day, drain off water. Rinse 3 times with cucumbers in jug.
    Mix alum with enough water to cover cucumbers.
    Let stand 24 hours.
    Drain and rinse 3 times.
    Cover with pure apple vinegar (no water).
    Let stand 10 days.
    Drain off vinegar (add spices).
    Add 3 cups of sugar each day for 3 days (9 cups in all).
    Shake each day.
    Keep indefinitely.
    Do not seal or refrigerate.
