Roberta'S Toffee Bars - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sugar (may use 1/2 light brown and 1/2 granulated) *
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 3/4 c. flour
    1 c. butter or margarine, softened
    1 egg, separated
    1/2 c. chopped pecans or walnuts
Preparation
    *Original recipe calls for all granulated, also good with all brown sugar.
