Deep South Hush Puppies - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. white corn meal
    1 Tbsp. flour
    1/2 tsp. soda
    1 tsp. salt
    1 egg, beaten
    3 Tbsp. onion, finely chopped
    1 1/4 c. buttermilk
    1/2 to 2 tsp. sugar
    solid Crisco or Crisco oil
    1 stick butter, softened
Preparation
    Mix dry ingredients; add beaten egg, onion, buttermilk and sugar.
    Mix well.
    Melt enough shortening in a saucepan or deep skillet to make it 2 1/2-inches deep.
    Drop batter by teaspoon into hot (350\u00b0 to 380\u00b0) oil.
    Fry 4 to 6 hush puppies at a time. Cook until golden brown on both sides.
    Drain on brown paper.
