Ingredients

1/2 c. soft shortening (part butter)
1 c. sugar
1 egg
3/4 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. cocoa
1 c. chopped nuts
Preparation

Mix shortening, sugar and egg thoroughly.
Stir in buttermilk and vanilla.
Sift together and stir in the flour, soda, salt and cocoa.
Mix in nuts, if desired.
Chill dough at least 1 hour. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto lightly greased sheet.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes at 400\u00b0, or until almost no imprint remains when lightly touched.
