Date Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. sugar
    1/4 c. shortening
    1 egg
    1 1/2 c. flour
    1 tsp. baking powder
    1 tsp. soda
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1 c. chopped dates
    1 c. cold water
    3/4 c. chopped nuts
Preparation
    Add water to dates and let stand.
    Cream shortening and sugar; add egg and mix well.
    Add dates, water and chopped nuts.
    Add dry ingredients and vanilla.
    Mix well.
    Bake in 2 (8-inch) round greased and floured pans.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 25 to 30 minutes. This was \"the birthday cake.\"
