Buttermilk Corn Bread - cooking recipe

2 c. corn meal
1/2 c. sifted flour
2 Tbsp. sugar (if desired)
1 beaten egg
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
2 c. buttermilk
2 Tbsp. shortening, melted
Preparation

Sift together corn meal, flour, baking powder, soda, salt and sugar.
Combine egg, buttermilk and shortening.
Add liquid ingredients to dry mixture, stirring only enough to moisten dry ingredients.
Pour into hot, well greased muffin pans, corn stick pans or 10-inch skillet or pan.
Bake in 450\u00b0 oven for 20 minutes for muffins or corn sticks, 25 to 30 minutes for square pan or skillet.
Makes about 12 muffins, corn sticks or pieces.
