Southwest Iowa'S Sweet 'N Sour Sauerkraut - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 large onion, chopped
    1/4 c. butter
    2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced in 1/2-inch pieces
    2 (16 oz.) cans sauerkraut, drained
    1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes, undrained
    3/4 c. packed light brown sugar
    1/2 c. dry white wine (optional)
    1 Tbsp. caraway seed
    black pepper to taste
Preparation
    Preheat oven to 325\u00b0.
    Melt butter in large skillet over medium-high heat.
    Add onions and apples, saute until softened, 3 to 5 minutes.
    Combine onion and apples with sauerkraut in large mixing bowl.
    Stir in tomatoes, brown sugar and wine.
    Season with caraway seed and pepper.
    Place mixture in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
    Cover tightly with foil and bake 1 1/4 hours.
    Uncover and bake another 1/2 hour.
    Serve as a side dish to roast turkey. Serves 12 people.
