Ingredients

1/2 c. butter (no substitutes)
1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 c. buttermilk
2 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. soda
1/2 c. nut meats, chopped
1/2 c. chopped dates or raisins
Preparation

Cream butter with sugar; add egg.
Beat well.
Stir in flour mixture alternately with buttermilk.
Add nuts and fruit.
Pour into a 3-quart Pyrex bowl and steam, uncovered, in a heavy kettle with tight fitting lid for 1 1/2 hours.
No peeking!
Be sure water is at least 2 inches up sides of bowl.
Serve with Vanilla Sauce.
