Grapefruit Baked Alaska - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 large grapefruit
    sugar
    1/8 tsp. salt
    3 egg whites
    6 Tbsp. sugar
    1/2 tsp. vanilla
    1 pt. vanilla ice cream
Preparation
    Cut grapefruit in halves; remove cores.
    Cut around each section, loosening fruit from membrane.
    Sprinkle lightly with sugar; chill.
    When ready to serve, preheat oven to 500\u00b0.
    Add salt to egg whites and beat until foamy throughout; gradually add 6 tablespoons sugar, beating until very stiff and glossy.
    Add vanilla.
    Remove grapefruit halves from refrigerator.
    Place heaping spoonful of ice cream in center of each half.
    Cover with meringue.
    Place in preheated oven until lightly browned, about 1 minute.
    Serve at once.
