Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    6 qt. medium cucumbers, sliced
    3/4 c. salt
    1 qt. vinegar
    2 Tbsp. celery seed
    6 medium white onions, sliced
    2 c. water
    4 c. sugar
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
Preparation
    Wash cucumbers thoroughly before slicing.
    Arrange cucumbers and onions in layers in earthenware crock or bowl.
    Sprinkle each layer with salt.
    Cover; let stand 3 hours.
    Drain off juice which has accumulated.
    Combine water, vinegar, sugar, celery seed and mustard seed; bring to a boil, stirring, until sugar is dissolved. Boil for 3 minutes.
    Add cucumber mixture; bring once more to boiling point, but do not boil.
    Pack immediately into hot, sterilized jars.
    Seal at once.
