Soft Molasses Cookies - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. molasses
    1 c. sugar
    1 c. shortening, melted
    1 egg, beaten
    4 tsp. soda
    2/3 c. hot water
    5 c. sifted all-purpose flour
    1 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
    3 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    3/4 tsp. salt
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Mix the melted shortening with the sugar and molasses; blend thoroughly.
    Add the beaten egg and the soda which has been dissolved in the hot water.
    Mix in the vanilla.
    Have ready the flour which has been mixed and sifted with the cream of tartar, spices and salt; add and mix thoroughly.
    Let stand in a cool place for 1/2 to 1 hour.
    Roll to about 1/8-inch thickness.
    Cut and place on greased cookie tins.
    Bake in 400\u00b0 oven until done. Watch the baking because molasses products burn easily at this temperature, but a softer cookie results.
