Sweet Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    11 c. boiling water
    1 c. salt
    1 gal. cucumbers, cut
    2 Tbsp. alum
    vinegar
    2 Tbsp. mixed pickling spice
    9 c. sugar
Preparation
    Add salt to boiling water and let cool.
    Pour over cucumbers and leave 2 weeks.
    Wash off brine.
    Use enough cold water to cover cucumbers.
    Add alum and leave 24 hours.
    Drain and discard alum water.
    Pour enough cold vinegar over cucumbers to cover and add mixed pickling spice.
    Leave 24 hours.
    Drain and discard.
    Add 3 cups sugar after discarding vinegar.
    After 24 hours, add 3 more cups sugar.
    Add 3 more cups sugar after another 24 hours.
    Syrup will rise to cover pickles as sugar dissolves.
    Store in glass jars.
    Jars do not have to be sealed.
