Ingredients

1 1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. molasses or brown sugar
1 c. butter or margarine
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. buttermilk
6 c. flour
1 tsp. soda
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Preparation

Cream sugar
and shortening;
add molasses, vanilla and eggs and
beat
thoroughly.
Sift together dry ingredients and add alternately
with
milk to creamed mixture.
Divide batter into 6 equal
parts
and
shape
into round balls.
Place each ball in the
middle
of a greased and floured 9-inch cake pan. Pat dough to edge
of pan.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes at 375\u00b0. Cool layers slightly,
about
2
minutes and remove from pan. Spread hot filling
on
top
of each layer.
Let cake ripen in closed container for 10 to 12 hours before serving.
