Thumbprints - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. shortening (part butter or margarine)
    1/4 c. light brown sugar
    1 egg yolk
    1/2 tsp. vanilla
    1 c. sifted all-purpose flour
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1 egg white
    3/4 c. finely or coarsely chopped nuts
    jelly, jam or tinted butter frosting
Preparation
    Cream shortening and brown sugar.
    Add egg yolk and vanilla. Beat thoroughly.
    Sift flour and salt. Stir into creamed mixture. Roll dough into ball, 3/4-inch in diameter.
