Ingredients
-
1/4 cup Crisco shortening
1 cup white sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups sifted flour (measure after sifting)
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Preparation
-
Melt shortening in a 3-4 quart saucepan over low heat.
Remove from heat and cool slightly.
Add sugar, molasses and egg, beat well with electric mixer.
Sift together:
flour, soda, ginger, (ground) cloves, cinnamon and salt.
Add small amount at a time to the first mixture and mix well -- dough will be stiff.
Chill for an hour.
Form in 1-inch balls, roll in white granulated sugar, and place on cookie sheet 2 inches apart.
Bake 8-9 minutes in 375-degree oven.
Allow cooling on baking rack or newspaper then store in an airtight container.
If they are left in oven too long they become hard instead of \"crunchy & great for dunking\".
Makes about 60 cookies.
