Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 gal. cucumbers
    8 small onions
    1/2 c. salt
    4 c. sugar
    1/2 tsp. cloves, ground
    1 tsp. celery seed
    2 Tbsp. mustard seed
    5 c. vinegar
Preparation
    Wash and slice cucumbers and onions crosswise.
    Mix cucumbers, onions and salt; cover with ice.
    Place heavy lid over and let stand for 3 hours.
    Mix sugar, turmeric and cloves; add mustard seed, celery seed and vinegar.
    Pour over cucumbers and onions. Cook over low heat until mixture reaches scalding point (do not boil).
    Place in hot jars and seal.
