Maryland Black Walnut Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 c. sifted flour
    2 3/4 tsp. baking powder
    1/4 tsp. salt
    2/3 c. sugar
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    1 tsp. vanilla
    3 eggs, separated
    3/4 c. milk
    1 1/2 c. ground black walnuts
Preparation
    Sift flour, baking powder and salt.
    Cream shortening with sugar and vanilla until fluffy.
    Add beaten egg yolks and beat thoroughly.
    Add sifted dry ingredients and milk alternately in small amounts to sugar-egg mixture, beating well after each addition.
    Add nuts.
    Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
    Pour into greased 9-inch cake pans.
    Bake in preheated 350\u00b0 oven for 30 minutes.
    Makes two 9-inch layers.
