Mrs. Edwards' Fruit Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. shortening
    2 c. sugar
    1 tsp. cloves
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1 tsp. nutmeg
    1 tsp. allspice
    1 c. sweet milk
    8 egg whites (unbeaten)
    4 c. sifted flour
    1 Tbsp. baking powder
    1/4 lb. candied cherries
    1 c. nuts
    1 lb. raisins
    1/2 lb. currants
    1/2 lb. citron
Preparation
    Cream sugar and shortening.
    Add spices, milk and egg whites; mix well.
    Sift flour and baking powder; add fruit and nuts to flour mixture.
    Stir into creamed mixture; blend well.
    Pour into 5 greased and floured 8-inch round pans.
    Bake in slow oven, 325\u00b0 for 40 minutes or until cakes spring back when lightly touched with finger.
