Onion Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/4 c. unsalted butter
    7 large onions, thinly sliced
    1 tsp. chopped garlic
    1/2 c. all-purpose flour
    freshly ground black pepper
    4 (14 oz. each) cans beef broth
    2 c. water
    8 slices French bread
    2 c. grated Gruyere cheese
Preparation
    Melt the butter in a 5-quart Dutch oven.
    Add the onions and cook over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring often until well browned.
    Add the garlic and the flour.
    Stir until the flour is no longer white.
    Add the broth, water and pepper.
    Stir well and bring to a boil.
