Senate Bean Soup - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 lb. navy beans
    4 qt. hot water
    1 1/2 to 2 lb. smoked ham hocks
    1 onion, chopped
    butter
    salt and pepper
Preparation
    Wash navy beans and run them through hot water.
    Put beans in large boiler with water and ham hocks.
    Boil slowly, covered, for around 3 hours.
    Braise onion in a little butter.
    When onion is brown, add it to the soup mixture.
    Serve real hot.
    Add salt and pepper only after you put soup in individual bowls.
    Serves 8.
