Ingredients

1 c. shortening
1 c. white sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
2/3 c. milk
4 c. flour
4 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 lb. cut up dates
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water
1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation

Cream together first 4 ingredients; add milk.
Sift together flour, tartar, soda and salt.
Add flour mixture to sugar mixture and add vanilla.
Roll out on a floured board to 1/4-inch thickness.
Cut with a very small cookie cutter 2-inches.
Place a teaspoonful of date filling on each cookie and cover with a second cookie; press edges together.
With a fork, punch holes in top of cookie.
Bake at 375\u00b0 until light brown, about 12 minutes.
