Lye Soap - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 (8 oz.) can lye
2 1/2 pt. rain water (rain water is a must)
    6 lb. grease
Preparation
    Heat the grease and strain.
Measure and set aside to cool. Combine lye and water and stir slowly into cooled, but not congealed, grease.
Use a granite dishpan, no other ware will do. Stir all the time, while pouring lye and water mixture into grease.
    Use a wooden stick.
When the mixture is about the color and consistency of honey, pour into paper-lined carton boxes and allow to stand overnight or until hard enough to cut in squares. Age a month to six months.
Keep from intense cold or intense heat, the closet is the best.
