Ingredients

3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. molasses
1 egg
2 tsp. baking soda
2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Preparation

Melt shortening in 3 or 4-quart saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat; allow to cool, then add sugar, molasses, egg and vanilla.
Beat well.
Stir together flour, soda, spices and salt; add to first mixture.
Mix well and chill thoroughly.
Form in 1-inch balls; roll in granulated sugar and place on ungreased cookie sheet 2-inches apart.
Bake at 375\u00b0 for 8 to 10 minutes. Makes about 4 dozen.
