Icicle Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 gal. cucumbers, cut lengthwise
    1 gal. water
    1 pt. salt
    1 gal. boiling water
    2 Tbsp. powdered alum
    2 gal. vinegar
    8 pt. sugar
    spices to taste
Preparation
    Let first 3 ingredients stand 7 days.
    Drain and pour off liquid.
    Add boiling water and alum.
    Let stand 24 hours.
    Drain; pour off liquid.
    Make syrup of vinegar and sugar.
    Boil and pour over cucumbers.
    Continue this for 4 days.
    Add spices to taste. Can and seal.
