No Seal Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    whole cucumbers
    salt
    5 oz. alum
    vinegar (about 1 gal.)
    sugar (4 to 5 lb.)
    3 or 4 bags pickling spice
Preparation
    Fill 4 gallon churn with whole cucumbers.
    Add 2 cups salt for each gallon of water.
    Cover cucumbers with salt water and let stand 7 days.
    Remove from churn.
    Wash and slice.
    Return to churn.
    Mix alum and water to cover.
    Let stand 2 nights.
    Remove from churn and wash.
    Return to churn and add vinegar to cover. Let stand overnight.
