Paper Thin Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 gal. cucumbers, sliced thin
    1 pt. salt
    1 gal. water
    2 Tbsp. powdered alum
    1/2 gal. vinegar
    8 pt. sugar
    3/4 box pickling spice
Preparation
    Cover cucumbers with salt and 1 gallon boiling water.
    Stir each day for 7 days.
    Drain and with 1 gallon boiling water and 2 tablespoons powdered alum, let stand 24 hours.
    Drain and mix in vinegar, sugar and pickling spices.
    Boil and pour over cucumbers. Let stand 4 days.
    Each day, drain off syrup and boil.
    Pour over cucumbers.
    Pack in jars.
    Pour hot syrup over pickles in jars, then seal.
