Fruited Almond Custard - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. sugar
    1/8 tsp. salt
    1 Tbsp. cornstarch
    2 c. milk
    2 eggs, separated
    1/4 tsp. each: vanilla and almond extracts
    2 c. fruit (such as sliced bananas, cooked dried apricots, canned sliced peaches or tangerine sections)
    2 Tbsp. toasted, slivered almonds
Preparation
    In heavy saucepan, mix 1/4 cup of the sugar, the salt and the cornstarch.
    Stir in milk.
    Put over medium heat and cook, stirring until slightly thickened.
    Beat egg yolks until thick, then stir in small amount of hot mixture.
    Stir back into saucepan and cook, stirring, until sauce bubbles up.
    Remove from heat.
    Pour into bowl.
    Stir in flavorings.
    Cool.
    Distribute fruits evenly in shallow 1 1/2-quart lightly buttered baking dish.
    Cover with cooled custard.
    Beat egg whites until almost stiff, then gradually add remaining sugar, beating until stiff.
    Spoon lightly on pudding.
    Sprinkle with almonds.
    Bake at 400\u00b0 for 5 minutes or until golden brown.
