My Favorite Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 stick butter or margarine
    1/2 c. vegetable shortening
    2 c. all-purpose flour
    2 c. sugar
    5 egg yolks
    1 tsp. baking soda
    1 c. buttermilk
    1 tsp. vanilla
    1 (3 1/2 oz.) can coconut
    1/2 c. chopped nuts
    5 egg whites, stiffly beaten
Preparation
    Cream butter or margarine.
    Add sugar and beat until mixture is smooth.
    Add vanilla and beat.
    Sift flour and measure, then add baking soda and sift 2 more times.
    Add flour to sugar and butter mixture.
    Add buttermilk and beat until smooth.
    Add coconut and nuts and beat some more.
    Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour batter into 3 greased 8-inch cake pans and bake at 350\u00b0 for 30 minutes.
