Mother'S Buttermilk Icing - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. white sugar
    1/2 c. buttermilk
    1/2 tsp. soda
    1 tsp. white corn syrup
    1/4 c. butter or margarine
    1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation
    Cook over low heat to soft ball stage, stirring constantly. This cooks to a caramel color and is clear.
    Spread on cake while still warm. This is enough for 1 sheet cake.
    If you care to, punch holes in cake with fork before spreading icing on. This makes it even better.
