Ingredients

1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter or margarine
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tsp. powdered sugar
3 tsp. milk
1/4 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour
12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
hazelnuts or pecans (optional)
Preparation

In a mixing bowl, beat shortening and butter together with mixer on medium for 30 seconds. Add sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, cocoa powder and powdered sugar. Beat well and add the rest of the ingredients except flour, chips and nuts. Add flour slowly, after beating the other ingredients well. Lastly, add the chips and nuts as desired. Drop dough on cookie sheets by rounded spoonfuls. Bake at 375\u00b0 for 8 to 10 minutes. Transfer to wire rack and cool. Makes 6 dozen cookies.
