Shrink-Proof, Weep-Proof Meringue - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1/2 c. water
    1 Tbsp. cornstarch
    dash of salt
    1/4 c. plus 2 Tbsp. sugar
    3 egg whites (room temperature)
Preparation
    Combine water, sugar and cornstarch in a small saucepan, stirring well.
    Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until transparent and thickened.
    (This will take about 2 minutes.)
    Beat egg whites and salt until foamy.
    Continue beating while gradually pouring cooked mixture into egg whites.
    Beat three minutes or until stiff (but not dry) peaks form.
    Do not overbeat.
    Yields enough for 1 (9-inch) pie.
