California Chocolate Brownies - cooking recipe

1/2 c. shortening
1 c. light corn syrup
2 sq. unsweetened chocolate, melted
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 tsp. vanilla
3/4 c. sifted cake flour or regular flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 c. chopped nuts
1/2 bag (12 oz. bag) chocolate chips (optional)
Preparation

Cream shortening until fluffy.
Gradually beat in corn syrup until thoroughly mixed and light and fluffy.
Stir in melted chocolate.
Add eggs and vanilla.
Sift together cake flour, baking powder and salt.
Add 1/4 cup at a time to creamed mixture. Fold in nuts.
Pour into well-greased 8-inch square pan.
Bake in moderate oven (350\u00b0) 30 to 35 minutes or until slight imprint remains when touched lightly with finger.
Set pan on rack to cool completely, then sprinkle with powdered sugar and cut into 2-inch squares.
