Red Cabbage - cooking recipe

1 medium red cabbage, shredded
1 c. water
1/4 c. white vinegar
1/2 c. butter or margarine
1/4 c. firmly packed light brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
4 medium Granny Smith apples
Preparation

Combine cabbage, water, vinegar, butter or margarine, brown sugar, salt and nutmeg in a Dutch oven; bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Peel and cut apples into fourths; add to cabbage mixture.
Simmer 30 minutes or until liquid evaporates and apples are tender, stirring occasionally.
Makes 8 servings.
