Lenten Spice Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 1/2 c. raisins, or cut up dried prunes, etc.
    1 3/4 c. brown sugar, packed or white sugar
    1/2 c. vegetable shortening or oil
    3/4 tsp. nutmeg
    1 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
    1/2 tsp. salt
    3 to 3 1/2 c. flour
Preparation
    In large saucepan, combine raisins or dried fruit, sugar, shortening, spices and salt (cloves may be omitted).
    Boil for 3 minutes.
    Remove from heat and cool.
    Sift flour with baking powder and soda.
    Blend into liquid mixture, mixing thoroughly.
    Spread into well-greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan and bake in 325\u00b0 oven for about 1 hour.
    Cool in pan on rack.
    This can also be baked in large-size cookie sheet 1-inch deep.
    Bake 45 to 50 minutes.
    This needs no icing.
