Sweet Crisp Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2 gal. cucumbers
    1 pt. salt
    1 gal. boiling water
    1 Tbsp. alum
    2 1/2 qt. vinegar
    8 pt. sugar
    2 Tbsp. mixed pickling spice
Preparation
    Slice cucumbers in about 3/8-inch slices; slice or split regardless of size.
    Put in crock.
    Pour over salt dissolved in boiling water.
    Cover with cloth and let stand 1 week.
    A scum may arise, but no alarm if cucumbers are well covered.
    After 1 week, drain.
    Cover with boiling water and let stand 24 hours.
    Drain. Cover with boiling water and alum.
    Let stand 24 hours and drain. Make syrup with vinegar and sugar; bring to a boil.
    Add spices. Let stand 24 hours.
    Drain liquid; reheat and let stand 24 hours. Repeat process for 5 days.
    Repeat process and can.
