Ingredients

1/2 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. syrup (homemade, see below)
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 eggs
1/2 c. lard
3 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
vanilla
salt
flour
Preparation

Homemade Cookie Syrup:
Heat 2 c. sugar in a pan (iron skillet works best).
Cook until dark and bubbles are clear.
Take from heat, let cool for awhile, then slowly add 1 c. water.
Boil hard for 1 minute (longer for thicker syrup).
Yields about 2 c. syrup.
