Ingredients

3 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. shortening
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3/4 tsp. cloves
3/4 tsp. ginger
3/4 tsp. allspice
2 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. baking soda
1 c. dark molasses
5 c. flour
1/2 c. water
sugar
strawberry or raspberry jelly
Preparation

Preheat oven to 350\u00b0.
Cream together 3 1/2 cups sugar, shortening, spices, salt and baking soda.
Add the molasses and blend well.
Gradually mix in the flour.
Then add the water to make a dough of pie crust consistency.
For each cookie, take 1 teaspoon of dough and roll it into a ball, then roll the ball in sugar.
Place each on ungreased cookie sheet, make a small indentation in the top of each ball and fill with a dot of jelly. Bake for 8 minutes.
Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with sugar.
Cool before storing.
