Ingredients

1/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 c. molasses
3 eggs
6 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
Preparation

Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add molasses, mixing well.
Add eggs; combine dry ingredients.
Add to creamed mixture, alternately with buttermilk, beating well after each addition.
Add vanilla.
Place dough on floured surface (work in enough flour to make dough easy to handle).
Divide into 9 balls.
Press each ball of dough evenly over bottom of a lightly greased 9-inch pan.
Bake at 350\u00b0 for 12 to 15 minutes or until light brown.
Cool slightly.
Remove from pan; cover each layer with apple filling, until all 9 layers are used.
