Caramel Icing - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    3 cups sugar
    1 can (5 1/2 oz.) evaporated milk
    1/2 cup butter or margarine
    Pinch salt
    1 cup chopped pecans (optional)
    1 can pineapple, drained
Preparation
    Melt 1 cup of sugar in iron skillet or heavy saucepan until caramelized.
    Mix remaining 2 cups sugar with milk, butter and salt and cook slowly.
    When it begins to boil, add the caramelized sugar and stir well.
    Let come to a good boil.
    Cook slowly to soft ball stage.
    Remove from heat.
    Beat and add nuts.
    Spread pineapple on cake while hot.
    This icing can be used on any of your favorite cake recipes.
