Molasses Cake - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    1 c. homemade syrup
    2/3 tsp. soda
    1/2 c. shortening
    1/2 c. buttermilk
    2 c. sifted self-rising flour
    vanilla or spices to flavor
    2 eggs
Preparation
    Now follow directions exactly as written:
    heat molasses and remove from heat.
    Beat soda into molasses.
    Add shortening, then buttermilk; stir well.
    Add self-rising flour, beating well.
    Add spices or vanilla or both (I use both).
    Add eggs last then beat hard and well.
    Makes 3 layers.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 until done.
    Test with toothpick or finger pressure in center.
    No matter what you think, add the eggs last!
    Ice with Brown Sugar Icing.
