Congo Squares - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    2/3 c. shortening
    2 1/4 c. packed brown sugar
    2 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
    2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    3 eggs, beaten
    1 Tbsp. vanilla
    2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips (12 oz.)
    1 c. chopped nuts
Preparation
    In a saucepan, melt shortening over medium heat.
    Stir in brown sugar.
    Cool slightly; combine flour, baking powder and salt.
    Add gradually with eggs to shortening mixture.
    Stir in vanilla, chips and nuts (batter will be very stiff).
    Spread into a greased and floured 12 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
    Bake at 350\u00b0 for 25 to 30 minutes.
    Cut into squares while warm.
    Yield:
    48 bars.
