Bread And Butter Pickles - cooking recipe

Ingredients
    12 lb. medium cucumbers, sliced
    1 c. salt
    10 to 14 medium onions, sliced
    1 1/2 qt. red vinegar
    1 Tbsp. celery seed
    1/2 c. mustard seed
    1/4 to 1/3 tsp. cayenne pepper
    6 c. sugar
Preparation
    Combine the cucumbers, salt and sliced onions.
    Add ice cubes; let stand for 3 hours.
    Drain and rinse thoroughly.
    Combine the vinegar, seasonings and sugar; boil.
    Add cucumbers and onions. Heat to simmering.
    Pack hot.
    Avoid boiling, as it softens pickles.
    Seal while hot.
    Yields 12 to 13 pints.
