Ingredients

1 c. flour
3/4 c. cornmeal
1/4 c. shortening
1 Tbsp. sugar
3/4 tsp. salt
Enough milk to make a stiff batter
Large sweet onions (Walla Walla or Bermuda are best)
Preparation

Mix all ingredients together, except onions, until well blended. Slice onions into 1/2 inch rounds; separate into rings. Dip onions in batter and deep fry until golden brown.
